Keeping People and Their Pets Together
It’s really tough to see people turn their pets into the shelter. Sometimes these people and their pets have been together for many years. The emotional stress is great on both the owners and their pets. The reasons for giving up pets are many, but some common ones are moving and/or landlord doesn’t permit pets, allergies, pregnancy, or the animal is misbehaving. We’re going to try to provide information that may help keep people together with their pets. If you have any suggestions or useful information please send them to the webmaster.

HSUS Pets For Life Campaign - The HSUS’ campaign to keep pets and their people together. Has lots of useful information on making the commitment to adopt, solving behavior problems, finding pet-friendly rental housing, coping with allergies and spaying or neutering your pet.

Allergies - Sometimes allergies are just too severe to allow people to have pets in their homes. However, that isn’t always the case. With the right knowledge, you may be able to keep your pets in the home.
HSUS - Coping with Allergies To Companion Animals
http://www.petallergy.com/ - This is a site sponsored by Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals. They suggest a drug that they manufacture that is advertised to work well for pet allergies along with other common ones. Mainly though, this site provides lots of useful information and tips on how to reduce symptoms.

Domestic Violence - Victims of domestic abuse often must give up their pets at a time when they most need an animal’s unconditional acceptance. In worst cases, victims remain with abusers because they can’t figure out how to save their pets as well as themselves. Many shelters for animals and for humans have begun creating programs that provide a safe haven for pets of documestic abuse victims. To fina a program visit: www.hsus.org/firststrike/programs/safe-haven.html .

If there is no program in your community, you might consider starting one. To order a free copy of Safe Haven for Pets: Guidelines for Programs Sheltering Pets for Women Who Are Battered (Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, 2000), send a self-addressed mailing label to Dr. Frank Ascione, Department of Psychology, Utah State University, 2810 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322-2810.

Renting With Pets - NJ is a tough place to find rental housing that allows pets. There doesn’t seem to be the same problem in our neighboring states. If you’re a landlord, please visit some of the sites listed below; you may find that renting to pet owners is worthwhile (and saves lives!)
ASPCA Model Pet Ownership Policy - This is a PDF document to give you guidelines on living with pets in rental units.
www.mspca.org - The Massachusetts SPCA has a booklet for designing a workable pet policy.
www.sfspca.org - The San Francisco SPCA’s site includes a landord’s guide, a tenant’s guide, referral list and pet resume guide. Go to the main site and then click on “Open Door Housing.”
www.leasewithpets.com - This company sells pet deposit warranties that cover up to $5000 worth of damage per rental unitl Tenants pay a $275 refundable fee for protection, plus $200 per year. A free temporary warranty is also available to convince landlords to accept pets.
www.peoplewithpets.com - Free for apartment hunters. Landlords pay a flat fee for web listing, or pay per referral if they don’t want to be listed on the web. You can contact them by phone at a toll-free number: 888-293-PETS.
www.apartments.com , www.springstreet.com , and www.gracehill.com are not pet-related sites but online apartment listings and search pages. They do include pets as a search criteria.

Traveling With Pets -
