Why not join Second Chance For Animals?

By joining Second Chance For Animals you get the opportunity to have a meaningful  impact on improving the lives of the animals living in the Franklin Township shelter.  New volunteers must go through an orientation session. To work with the dogs additional training is provided by us.  .scfavolunteer

Please review the volunteer opportunities listed below. If you are interested in any of the ways listed, please fill out the Volunteer Application. (Or if you prefer, download the application in PDF format.  You can leave the completed application at the Franklin Township animal shelter, e-mail it to volunteer_coordinator@secondchanceforanimals.org or mail it to SCFA, P.O. Box 5172, Somerset, NJ 08875.)

Only individuals that match our current needs will be invited to attend a general volunteer orientation.  We encourage EVERYONE to check out our How to Help.

NOTE:  You must be 18 years of age or older - Franklin Township does not permit people younger than that to work with the animals

Volunteer Opportunities

Work at the Shelter - Taking care of all the cats, dogs and other animals at the shelter is a huge job.  The paid shelter staff clean and feed every animal but it can take them late in the evening.  Therefore, there is a great need for volunteers to come in every day of the week to help the shelter staff.

What does that mean?

  • Scoop cat litter pans and dog kennels of waste.
  • Clean every cage and kennel (inside and outside.)
  • Provide fresh bedding.
  • Do laundry.
  • Fold and put away clean towels and bedding.
  • Wash food and water bowls.
  • Provide clean water and food.
  • Unfold newspapers (for lining the cat cages.)
  • Assist potential adopters.

Please note: lifting or moving 40 pound bags of litter may be needed.  There is bending and stooping and standing and stepping up on stools to reach upper cages.  Bleach is used in the water to help disinfect and prevent the spread of disease.

Assisting with Adoptions - Volunteers help with adoptions both at the shelter and outside venues like PetSmart or PetValu.  There is a lot of interaction with the public and volunteers will learn how to talk with and evaluate potential adopters.

Volunteers assisting with outside adoption venues come to the shelter, crate the animals and transport them to and from the event in their own cars.  The day may also involve some work in setting up, breaking down and cleaning the cages.  There is a lot of standing at each event.

Foster care - Most of the foster care provided is for kittens.  Because their immune systems are not developed, kittens have a better chance of survival if raised and socialized in a home setting.  Please consider fostering if you can:

  • Provide an isolated space for the foster animal.
  • Clean and feed on a regular basis.
  • Socialize.
  • Be comfortable with administering medications.
  • Travel to the shelter for regular check ups.

When kittens reach two pounds AND eight weeks of age they are sent to be spayed or neutered.  After a brief recovery, the foster parent returns to the shelter for adoption.

Transportation -Volunteers are needed regularly during the week to:

  • Transport animals to and from vet offices.
  • Drive wildlife to wildlife rescue sanctuaries.
  • Run other errands for the shelter such as getting supplies from the store.

Please note: volunteers use their own cars.  A small per-mile reimbursement for gas may be provided by SCFA with proper documentation, though most volunteers handle the cost themselves.

Animal Socialization - Dogs can be walked most days of the week by volunteers who have passed dog orientation training conducted by trained SCFA volunteers.  Walking dogs during he week requires additional time with our trainers since little assistance and supervision can be given during the week.  Anyone interested in walking dogs on week days is welcome to reach out to the volunteer coordinator with any questions at volunteer_coordinator@secondchanceforanimals.org

On Thursday nights volunteers are welcome between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM to socialize and groom the cats.  No cleaning is normally required.  Dogs may also be walked by qualified volunteers.

Fundraising - SCFA provides a substantial amount of financial support to the shelter. In order to continue to raise funds to support the ever-growing needs of the animals, we need volunteers to participate on the fundraising committee to help plan and run events.  Fundraising events include:

  • Paws for a Cause dog walk
  • Super 50-50 raffle
  • Gertrude Hawk candy sales
  • Tricky Tray
  • Santa Paws (pet pictures with Santa)
  • Shake-a-Can solicitation days
  • Donation cans
  • Fundraising letter

The SCFA Fundraising committee is always looking for additional fundraising opportunities - small or large.

Other areas for which volunteers are needed

Volunteer Coordination - It takes a lot of time and effort to schedule volunteers every week for our regular activities and special events.  New people have to be introduced to SCFA and volunteers need to be engaged throughout the year.  Membership meetings need to be planned and scheduled, meeting locations need to be reserved.  Volunteer manuals need to be updated and reproduced.

Team leaders - Our adoption events cannot happen without team leaders!  Team leaders organize and supervise the volunteers at outside adoption events and Saturdays at the shelter.  Team leaders take an active role in training new volunteers as well as working with the public.  Team leaders working at outside adoption events are responsible for approving or denying an adoption.  Anyone interested in being a team leader spends at least three Saturdays being trained in the role before doing it on his or her own.

Newsletter - The newsletter is one way for us to communicate with our volunteers.  We are always looking for people to help with writing.

Grant writing - Grants are just one other way that SCFA raises money.  We need people who can identify, cultivate and solicit funds from corporations and foundations.

Interested?  Please fill out this volunteer application.

We look forward to hearing from you!
