Emergency Response Team
Who We Are - The Emergency Response Team is Second Chance volunteers willing to assist the shelter during emergencies. You must be a member of Second Chance to participate. (See Join Us for more information on becoming a member.) SCFA volunteers interested in joining the team should e-mail Marianne.
What We Do - Our duties involve feeding and watering the animals, cleaning cages and other general care, and assisting with receiving the animals and record keeping. Some people may be asked to man the phones at the Emergency Control Center. Calls involving animal shelter and/or rescue would be directed to those people. People with vehicles that are able to transport animals might be asked to assist people who are unable to drive and need to get their animals to the shelter
Why a Team? As seen in other emergencies, animals are not welcome at shelters set up for people. Either people are unwilling to leave their homes without their animals or the animals are abandoned to fend for themselves under extreme conditions.
Thanks to Murray Rothblatt, Former Deputy Chief of Special Police, and Katie Nordhaus, Animal Control Officer we now can have people bring their animals to the shelter if they are required to exvacuate their homes. (The Response Team will attempt to provide transportation where people are unable to do it themselves.) Since the shelter has limited space, those animals that cannot be kept at the shelter will be taken to the municipal garage on Churchill Avenue. Owners of large animals like cows, goats, horses or ponies will be asked to bring them to a farm on South Middlebush Road.
Sheltering will be short-term until people can return to their homes or make other arrangements for the sheltering of their pets.
Joining The Team - Currently only SCFA volunteers may join the Emergency Response Team. Contact Marianne if you are interested. New members must also fill out the Disaster Response Volunteer Intake Form and the Volunteer Agreement & Release of Liability Form. You can download copies by clicking on the links. Completed copies are to be returned to Katie at the shelter.
Updates - The Reverse 911 System is now set up with the names and numbers of the Emergency Response Team.
CRATES NEEDED - The Response Team is asking for the public to donate crates to house the animals in. SCFA will make their crates available but the more that are stockpiled, the better equipped the Team will be to respond quickly. If you have any unused crates or know of anyone who does, please get in touch with Katie at 732 873-2500 X255.
