ABOUT US Who We Are: Second Chance for Animals, Inc. is a not-for-profit volunteer group devoted to enhancing the lives, adoption rates, and experiences of the animals living in shelters. . A Brief History: The Franklin Township Animal Shelter was established more than 30 years ago. Built with donated materials, it was large enough to handle the township’s needs at that time. As the township population continues to increase, so does the homeless animal population. However, the shelter has not grown to keep up with the demand. In March 1998, Lynn Lawson, a township resident, petitioned the township to have a volunteer group allowed in the shelter. The township granted the request and in July, 1998, Second Chance For Animals, Inc. was created and held its first meeting. The group has continued to expand ever since. Our Goals: Our ultimate goal is to have a new or expanded shelter in Franklin Township that will promote quality and humane animal care. The good news of 2001 was that our Town Council committed to this goal and allocated funds towards expanding and improving the shelter. The expansion is currently in the planning stage While this long-range goal is always on our minds, we focus on short-term goals as well. These include raising community awareness of the shelter, providing the animals with medical care, promoting a spay and neuter program, increasing the adoption rates, and generally improving the experiences of the animals at the shelter. How You Can Help: Please visit our page on how you can help since there are many ways you can contribute. Franklin Township Animal Shelter is a municipal shelter and all improvements to the shelter are subject to town approval. Second Chance for Animals is not politically motivated and welcomes any service or donations you wish to offer. Volunteer Participation: Volunteers from Second Chance for Animals, Inc. assist with the Saturday adoption days at the Franklin Township Animal Shelter (currently 12-3) and at the Bridgewater PETsMART superstore - located in the Promenade Shopping Center in Bridgewater - from 9-3. Besides assisting with adoptions, other volunteer activities include:
We are currently working on other projects that include: marketing & publicity, educational programs, and a spay/neuter program. Join Us! In order to become a volunteer you must be at least 18 years of age (we’re sorry but the Township does not allow people younger than 18 to work with the animals) and attend an orientation. Orientation sessions are required for all new volunteers. You can read more about joining by visiting our Join Us! page. You can contact us through e-mail at scfa1998@secondchanceforanimals.org or call 732 748-SCFA (7232.) Please be patient if it takes us a day or two to get back to you as we are all volunteers and our daily schedules do not always allow us to immediately reply. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As an old man walked down the beach one day, he saw a child picking up something from the sand and throwing it into the sea. The old man asked the child, "What are you doing?" “Chucking the starfish," the child replied. "Why?" asked the old man. "The starfish washed ashore in the high tide. If they stay on the beach they will dry out and die, so I'm chucking them back into the ocean." The old man looked at the child and at the beach and said, "There are hundreds of starfish on this beach. How can what you're doing make any difference?" The child bent down, picked up another starfish, pointed to it and said, "It makes a difference to this one," and threw it into the sea. -Author Unknown- |
